Three things
Not long after 9/11 a friend and I were discussing how everyone had a story about it. And everyone did. Most arresting were those of people who were supposed to be in the towers that morning but weren't. I made some remark about Wow, dude, that was close, etc. He pointed out that it shows you "just how many Americans don't show up for work on any given day."
This and the post-9/11 issue of the Onion are only two funny things I know of on the subject. Oh, and about a month afterward, someone on NPR sang "Hey, Mr Taliban, turn over bin Laden" to the tune of "Daylight come and we wan' go home."
